Bixby Provisions is bringing back pre-pandemic vibes with its gastropubby inaugural menu. Having opened just a few weeks ago, owner Björn Risse wants one thing: For folks to come in and explore the menu.
Spanning an international-fusion, gastropub-style menu—blood orange and beet salads and lobster mac’n’cheese sit next to tacos and spring rolls—the space is meant to feel lived in. And, most importantly, Bixby Provisions is for the neighborhood.
“We feel like this is, yes, approachable, but really quality food that has a bit of something for everyone,” Björn said. “I genuinely believe it’s a menu worth exploring… The kind of menu where you want to try something new with each progressive visit. We’ve expanded our beer and wine offerings. Have some select cocktails. It’s kind of a choose-your-own-adventure menu that can be for casual or celebratory occasions.”

Bixby Provisions is a place intended for patrons to continually explore its menu with repeated visits.
The rise in comfort food menus—Dolores on 4th Street, the newly minted Smog City Heights in Cal Heights, and ISM Brewing in DTLB are prime examples—reflects what was nearly impossible to miss pre-pandemic: gastropubs. They were simple: An eclectic assortment of brews. Long tables. Plenty of beer-friendly food—from veggie sides and hefty burgers to loaded fries and salads. They were food spaces as social gathering connectors.
Björn is even somewhat already connected to this: His German-centric Rasselbock space took over what was the OG gastropub of Bixby Knolls, The Factory.

And over the years, gastropubs began to disappear, slowly giving way to spaces with a more Californian sensibility. Steered away from communal seating. And focused on cocktails and wine more than beer. ISM and Smog City have felt this in their branding, having both pivoted away from being mainly about beer and now sharing a much broader message that their kitchens are fully dedicated—not just chef-adjacent.
Bixby Provisions reflects this updated gastropub. Fried asparagus stalks. French dips. Buffalo-drenched cauliflower bits. Doused-in-Parm Caesar salads. Björn’s goal is quite straight-forward: It’s comfort food and an international menu that is meant to evoke casualness as much as it can be worthy of a date.
