Long Beach Food Scene Intel is a series from Brian Addison that will recap food news throughout the city, both news that needs just a quick mention, is developing, or repeated news where you might have missed the full features.

Sonoratown and Recreational collab for one of the best seasonal drinks around

Two DTLB powerhouses—the long-loved Recreational Coffee and the winning-the-hearts-of-all Sonoratown—have partnered up on unquestionably one of the best drinks of the season: a horchata latte. Co-owner Daniel Ferradas noted they had created syrup from the taqueria’s popular house-made horchata. It is then blended with espresso and milk for a not-too-sweet, happily balanced, plenty of rice’n’cinnamon concoction worthy of your buck.

It becomes available this Friday, Dec. 6.

Angel’s Share will host two whiskey dinners: one featuring Texas grain-to-glass distillery Balcones on Dec. 4 and one featuring Japan-based Shibui whiskey on Dec. 12.

The Dec. 6 event will feature Balcones Lineage, Texas 1 Single Malt, Bably Blue, and Rye Bottled in Bond, with each guest leaving with a bottle of Lineage or Texas 1 Single Malt. The dinner includes a ribeeye steak, potatoes, and greens. For tickets, click here.

The Dec. 12 event Shibui Pure Grain, Shibui Skerry Cask 15 year, Shibui Nokoribi Kara Lightly Peated, Shibui 18 yr, and the Shibui Rare Cask 23 yr., with guests walking away with a Shibui Pure Grain bottle. Dinner is a four-course meal with courses to be announced later. For tickets, click here.

Sura now open on Mondays

Sura Korean BBQ & Tofu House—Downtown’s much-loved hub for Korean cuisine—will experiment with Monday operating hours from 5PM to 9:30PM. Across the board, Monday has become a day most restaurants are shuttered post-pandemic, with office lunch crowds and diners largely eschewing eating out (and the industry usually having the day off, hence why Mondays are often called “industry nights”). It is a warm welcome among DTLB businesses trying to figure out how to make more business hours work, following the Promenade collection of restaurants willing to stay open seven days a week and Sonoratown joining them.

Our cocktail scene has absolutely exploded—especially over the past year. And I absolutely loved writing this epic list, Long Beach.

ICYMI: How Sideburns became Long Beach’s most underrated burger joint

Sideburns is Long Beach’s most underrated burger joint in a city rife with plenty of solid burger contenders. Charming and definitively diner-y, Sideburns is the food sister to Stache Bar’s drinking culture. (A culture, mind you, that is having a renaissance of its own.)

With that, it is time to celebrate this little griddle gem.

ICYMI: The Breakfast Bar’s expansion is part of a growing trend in expanding DTLB’s ability for events

I loved writing this story because it is more than just how The Breakfast Bar has expanded. It is a more extensive discussion about how small businesses need to adapt, how most restaurants can no longer rely solely on walk-in patronage, and how different sectors of our city all work together to uplift one another.
