Long Beach breweries win big at California Brewers Guild awards

At this year’s California Brewers Guild competition, multiple Long Beach breweries scored big. Ambitious Ales in Bixby Knolls secured two medals: a silver medal for Berry Shower, recognized under the American-Style Sour Ale category. And a gold medal for Batman Rapids, which won in the New Zealand IPA category.
“We were elated to get the news on Batman Rapids and Berry Shower medaling at this year’s Brewers Cup,” said Ambitious owner Garrett Carroll. “Both beers have been long-time core beers and are constantly improving as we’ve grown. Congrats to all our fellow brewers for bringing home some hardware to represent the region well.”
Ten Mile Brewing earned a gold medal for Hooked On Onyx, its American-style black ale entered in the American Stout/Black Ales category.
“It feels incredible to be recognized by such a competitive competition and my fellow brewers, especially for what I consider the most challenging of the IPA styles,” said Ten Mile owner and brewer Jesse Sundstrom.
ISM Brewing—following their big win at the World Beer Cup—took home a silver medal for Hamburghini, its contemporary American-style pilsner while Long Beach Beer Lab also earned a silver medal for Siesta La Framboise, awarded in the Belgian-Style Fruit Lambic category.
Former Liberation/Brouwerji West brewer Eric McLaughlin takes over Syncopated

Syncopated Brewing has taken on a new brewer—and he is quite well known in the local beer scene: Eric McLaughlin. Starting off locally at the former Liberation Brewing Co. space in Bixby Knolls (now Beachwood Distilling) after a stint at Dude’s, he then quietly moved over to Brouwerji West as shift brewer until its last day. Now, Eric takes the helm from longtime veteran brewer Chris Klein.
Syncopated carved out a distinctive place in the greater Long Beach beer scene by pairing neighborhood-scale warmth with an intentionally offbeat brewing identity: founded by Jason Van Fleet of Dutch’s BrewHouse and Chris, the brewery takes its name from the musical concept of syncopation: different rhythms colliding in unexpected ways.
Proudly Serving collabs with Gemmae Bake Shop, Filipina Muy Thai fighter Jackie Buntan

Prepare for the Buntan Burger, Long Beach. This double patty with mozzarella cheese, banana ketchup aioli, longanisa, atchara, all on a homemade pandesal bun Gemmae, will debut on Friday, May 1.
“This is a collab we have been working on for a while,” said Proudly owner Matthew McIvor. “Jackie has been a customer of ours since the beginning and also a big foodie. When I found out she was Filipino, I was intrigued by the idea of making a burger together because it was a cuisine I wasn’t very familiar with. The learning process over the last month has been fun. I was also excited to get Gemmae Bake Shop involved as well and make this a hyperlocal collaboration.”
ICYMI: Long Beach’s Selva to host collab dinner with hyped Burmese-Texan BBQ joint Joplin’s

I cannot emphasize how much I love Long Beach’s growing love of collaborations and special menu dinners. In this case, Chef Carlos Jurado of Selva hosting one of SoCal’s brightest rising stars, Chef Saw Naing of Dutchess and Joplin’s up in Ojai. Both honed their talents together at Bouchon, making this a reunion of sorts.
What to expect? Chef Saw’s love of melding Burmese cuisine into common dishes and Chef Carlos’s adoration of smoke and Latin American flavors. Smoked spare ribs with masala potato salad. Pork belly rice bowls with pineapple barbecue sauce. Stir-fry noodles with smoked brisket…
It all goes down Thursday, April 30, at Selva.

ICYMI: Long Beach’s ISM scores big at World Beer Cup

What do we love? Seeing Long Beach succeed on the international stage.
ISM Brewing & Kitchen not only scored big at this year’s World Beer Cup but made Long Beach history as the first local brewery to score the gold in the competition’s most competitive category, Classic India Pale Ale. The brewery ousted over 200 other entries in the category to take home the gold for its Immutable Dawn IPA, following a silver for its Chepedelic New Zealand-style IPA.
Glasses up, Long Beach.

ICYMI: Panxa’s new chef, Richie Ramirez, unveils his first formal menu—and the space’s future

From upcoming mezcal dinners to witty meldings of Levantine, Mexican, and Southwestern cuisines in dishes ranging from duck carnitas to charred broccolini, Panxa’s new chef, Richie Ramirez, is ready to formally introduce himself to the Long Beach food community.
He is not here to steal the soul of Panxa, a space that, for many in the community, is sacred since it was founded by Chef Art Gonzalez and his wife, Vanessa Auclair. Like all legacy spaces and especially in 2026, it must evolve and adapt.
