After facing an uphill battle with its Belmont Shore location, losing any and every inch they could provide customers to stand and/or sit to eat, owner Kristin Colazus-Rodriguez and “Jeff de Ciusine” Jeff Paletz have decided to, well, expand their business elsewhere. Taking over yet another San Pedro space at 5th and San Pedro Streets for a full-on, sit-down dining experience, the new space is not only gorgeous but offers a new menu when it opens this Friday, Feb. 14.

“Opening this location feels like coming full circle,” said Kristin, a native of Long Beach. “We’re creating more than just a bakery: it’s a space where our passion for craft fermentation and seasonal ingredients can flourish in new ways, and bring people together around thoughtfully prepared food throughout the day.”

Rise Juice & Coffee quickly takes over former Rainbow Juices space in DTLB

In what hasn’t even been two weeks, Rise Juice & Coffee has taken over the former Rainbow Juices space in DTLB after its last day of service on Jan. 30. Essentially copying Rainbow’s model—from the jarring and labeling to what it basically offers—while also offering coffee—which somewhat reads tone-deaf considering Recreational Coffee is literally around the corner—there is an extreme positive in that there isn’t another empty storefront in Downtown Long Beach.

Temporary Bonsai Sushi & Sports Bar signage hung on Pine Avenue space in Downtown Long Beach

In an odd if not outright eyebrow-raising action, a temporary sign for a sushi space dubbed Bonsai has been hung outside the former Outfitters retail space at the southeast corner of Pine Avenue and 3rd Street. What’s so odd is that Outfitters is not only a massive space but would require an equally massive build-out: With no kitchen, no grease trap, no hood, and no grill vents, it should prove interesting to see if they project actually follows through.

Miracles From Honey opens in Belmont Shore

Belmont Shore could very well be Long Beach’s current epicenter of sweets: from Candified and La Macaron to Holey Grail and Republic of Pie—all joining classics like Sweet Jill’s and Rocky Mountain—have turned the stretch of businesses into a sweet-tooth’s dream. Joining them will be the newly minted Miracles From Honey shop, focusing on coffee cake and, specifically, the famed honey cake that is marlenka from the Czech Republic. It is located at 5353 E 2nd St.

After a nice a little break, I’m happy to be back with this month’s favorite things I got to taste and eat. From a magical crab-tuna-shrimp tostada and a dumpling soup to Thai glass noodles and corn bread with bacon jam, Long Beach’s food scene never stops making my palate do the happy dance.
