Long Beach Food Scene Intel is a series from Brian Addison that will recap food news throughout the city, both news that needs just a quick mention or repeated news where you might have missed the full features.

Heritage collabs with Oh La Vache for grilled cheese event

Heritage continues its rich history of collaborating with some of Long Beach’s best by partnering with the much-loved cheese shop that is Oh La Vache. Come Sept. 14—mimicking the sandwich-centric collab Heritage did with Hamburgers Nice earlier this year—Chef Philip will do a vegetarian play on a Reuben and Jessica’n’Erika will be doing a proper grilled cheese. Chef Philip will have pastrami-spiced broccolini with Russian dressing, Swiis cheese, and pickled Fresno chiles on rye. Oh La Vache will take the wonderfully mild-but-slightly-funky Morbier cheese and meld it with caramelized onions, tomato, and tarragon dijon on parmesan aioli-crusted’n’toasted sourdough.

Nick the Greek to stay open late—very late

Nick the Greek—which announced its replacement of Pietris Bakery in February of 2023 and opened in July of that year—has decided it will join the handful of restaurants citywide that are attempting to stay open later. Come Thursday through Saturday, it will remain open until 1:30AM.

And yes, get the Nick’s Fries. One of the best loaded fries in the city.

Nick the Greek is located at 5000 E. 2nd St.

Flight Night at Auld Dubliner continues—this round goin’ Japanese

Many people know of my love for The Auld Dubliner. And they also know my love for their tradition that is Friday Flight Night. Certainly, I err on the side that, indeed, Ireland is where the world’s best whiskey resides; American bourbon is nice but excessively sweet; Scotch is, well, for sworn lovers of peet. The only other whiskey coming near? Japanese whisky. So this tasting? Wondrous.

Alli Kaphiy opening in Cal Heights

Chef Karla Flores-Ybaceta of the Peru Mikhuna food truck and Alli Kaphiy coffee truck (as well as the former A Little Bit of Heaven catering services) has proven that, well, hard work pays off. Melding her love of Peruvian sandwiches and coffee, the chef has moved into the former Granny’s Donuts space at 3399 Atlantic Ave.

ICYMI: Sonoratown Long Beach will open its doors Sept. 17

Chivichangas. Caramelos. Bags of perfectly concocted flour tortillas. The waft of chargrilled carne asada. Sonoratown Long Beach is officially opening its doors on Sept. 17. It brings the famed DTLA taqueria to the mouths and stomachs of Long Beach for the first time.

ICYMI: Long Beach vegan staple Seabirds Kitchen to permanently shutter Sept. 8

This isn’t just a loss for the vegan community but the entire food scene of Long Beach. Major, major bummer… Chef Stephanie Morgan—like her counterpart, Chef Soozee Nguyen over at The Wild Chive—treated vegan food with the quality and care it deserved.

ICYMI: The Vintage LBC in Bixby Knolls is, oh, so much more than a cheese shop

The Vintage LBC comes off as a cheese shop—and indeed, it is. But it is much, much more than that. Owner Vanessa Harmon—along with her chef-slash-general manager Allison Porzner—have crafted a stellar bistro. wine bar, and cheese shop that’s a great place to get down on wines’n’cheese. A definitive space for salads’n’sweets. And, of course, a great place to buy cheeses, tinned fish, bread, crackers, accoutrements, and other market goods.
