Long Beach Art Scene: DTLB issues requests for muralists; micro-gallery art crawl; more

There is plenty of news surrounding Long Beach’s art scene—here are the highlights.

What started as convering Little Library boxes into, well, little art galleries from Long Beach residents and artists Carol and Dave Clark, is now returning. The public is invited to tour 25 micro-galleries during the 2nd Annual Long Beach Micro-Gallery Art Crawl on Saturday, June 28, from noon to 5PM

“These micro-galleries exist to provide an alternative space for artists to show their work and for communities to engage with the work outside of traditional galleries,” Dave said. “By standing next to a neighborhood sidewalk, the gallery catches the eye of everyday friends and neighbors, bringing them in to explore and experience art as part of their daily lives.”

SUNSETS at LBMA is a free evening event at the Long Beach Museum of Art on June 26. It will likely reflect their “After Dark” events, the Long Beach Museum of Art’s tradition of opening exhibits on a weekend evening. The practice—particularly during its years when it was directly collaborating with Long Beach Walls—catapulted the museum’s respect regionally and nationally.

DLBA seeking muralists for Downtown project

The Downtown Long Beach Alliance is putting out a call to artists as part of a new initiative: the DTLB Neighborhood Map Mural Project. Spearheaded by the Alliance’s Placemaking team and committee, the project aims to visually anchor the identity of each pocket of Downtown through public art—and the first mural is officially on deck.

Slated for the corner of 4th Street and Pine Avenue on the north-facing wall of Planet Fitness, the debut piece will act as a vibrant, illustrated guide to the neighborhood’s landmarks, personality, and pride. The $9,000 pilot mural is the first of seven planned across Downtown—each highlighting different neighborhoods like the Historic East Village, Willmore City, and more—as the city gears up for the 2028 Olympics and an ever-evolving urban core.

“This mural isn’t just about paint on a wall—it’s about putting our neighborhoods on the map, literally and figuratively,” said Stephanie Gonzalez, the Alliance’s Placemaking Manager. “We want people to see themselves here, explore more of Downtown, and take pride in the place they call home.”

Artists are encouraged to submit concepts by July 7, 2025, with a final design selected by a panel of local artists, community stakeholders, and the Placemaking Committee. The mural will be completed by the end of summer.

Between 2022 and 2024, the Long Beach Museum of Art quietly and significantly expanded its permanent collection. It welcomed more than 250 donated works that now shape the institution’s evolving identity. This exhibition pulls back the curtain on that growth, offering a first-time look at many of the pieces that have never been on view. It’s a celebration not just of individual works, but of the generous collectors and artists helping to push LBMA’s 75-year legacy forward.

And it ends this Sunday.
