With a change of ownership sign hanging on the window at Huf’s Hut on Bellflower—the last Long Beach location—fears arose that, since the string of Hof closures that started in the early 2010s to make way for more of the company’s Lucille’s BBQ brand, this location would face the same fate.
The change of ownership is happening; they are just formally transferring the alcohol license and space to the younger generation in the family, the grandchildren of Harold and Donna Hofman, the founders of the original Hofman’s that opened on the sand at 5th Place in Long Beach.
And this location is indeed closing—but for a remodel that has been planned since before the pandemic, according to a spokesperson from the company said.
If one could be hopeful, I would do so by dreaming that perhaps the Bellflower location will create as genuinely cool of a bar as the old 2nd and PCH location of Hof’s Hut had. Sunken in so that every patron sitting at the bar was eye level with the completely-standing bartender, it was a hidden gem where one could get a martini and a slice of pie.
Operating for 51 years, the space shuttered in 2013 to make way for what is now Lucille’s BBQ, an extension of the Hof brand.
Hof’s Hut is located at 2147 N. Bellflower Blvd.
